Doctor Syntax Losing His Way (c. 1820)

From The Tour of Doctor Syntax: In Search of the Picturesque, a Poem (c. 1820) by William Combe, illustrated by caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson

The character of Doctor Syntax, like many of Combe’s creations, was comical and intended as a satire of William Gilpin and his trendy descriptions of “the picturesque” — all the rage during this period.
